Description:
Large size, stocky and perching typical redstart. Male has white cap, black upperparts, and large white patch on wing. Slightly duller in fresh plumage due to indistinct grey feathers fringes. Female has buff-brown upperparts and buffish underparts. First-winter as adult.
Distribution:
Common resident and altitudinal migrant all across higher areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, except for Diamer. Occupies high-altitude boulder-strewn bushy slopes, rocky meadows and often near water, up to 4800m, forced to lower valleys in severe weather.
Behavior:
Forages in short flights from perch; more "nomadic" than congeners, continually moving on to new perch, rather than returning to well-established one, and perhaps more frequently aerial. In summer feeds exclusively on invertebrates, mostly insects and spiders; berries usually sole food in winter, in particular those of sea buckthorn, but midges also seen to be taken near water in winters.
